Bakchanten : a theatre project combining text and tap in the context of the play by the old Greek rebel Euripides, with young actors at the DOX theater in Utrecht, together with actor / director Daniel van Klaveren, who cracks me up with his physical humor all the time :-). We present our findings on 1 & 2 July in DOX in Utrecht.
Barok Disco : A long standing dream: Together with amazing musicians Mike Fentross (theorbe) and Henry Vega (electronics) we are finally creating the pilot show of the Baroque Disco for the Oranjewoud festival on 4th June.
Verre Verhalen (Stories from Far Away) : We are planning a new story telling project with fantastic classical pianist Celia García García and soprano singer Brigitte van Hagen. In this project we ask the audience to share stories with us, which we will provide a soundtrack on the spot! Check us out at 2 an 3 July at Festival van der Aa
Moments of Movement : To top it of, I went on a three day crash visit to Istabul to do another pilot at the beautiful Pera Museum... the next step with film director Eva Stotz: our new performance with live film, music and dance called Moments of Movement, which was generously supported by the Goethe Institute. Our amazing musicians were Korhan Futaci (sax), Sarp Maden (guitar) and Ediz Hafizoglu (drums).
Filmstill from the multiple award winning film One Million Steps, that I made with Eva Stotz in 2013 during Gezi Park in Istanbul.
Podium aan Zee : I am also happy to be invited to do the beginning, end and all the in between moments for the televised concert of the Residentie Orkest. Festival Classique is a wonderful festival with classical music in innovative ways, and this concert is an eye catching combination of dance and orchestral music. The national broadcast will be on sat 11 June @ NPO 2, or see it live at Festival Classique

There were also some nice improvised concerts this month.. with baroque instruments with UGLY PUG in Splendor, improvising with a randomly curated band @ Oorspong Series (one of the longest running improvised music concert series in Amsterdam), and more improvising with singer Sanem Kalfa and guitarist Sarp Maden @ De Ruimte.

MAY / JUNE : BACCHANTEN (theater)
Theater is the new thing.. I'm super excited to create a piece together with director / actor Daniel van Klaveren, with young performers from youth theatergroup DOX. And not just any piece.. we are tackling BACCHANTEN, an ancient Greek tragedy which, as always, has still many resonances in our present day world..
The piece will be driven by the rhythm of the feet, merging text and movement to tell a story of exclusion and self-destruction in the context of the idea of suïcide terrorism.
JUNE 4 - BAROK DISCO
Yes, again a crazy new project.. this time it revolves around the similiarities between early baroque music and (techno) dance music... Come and dance with us at the Oranjewoud festival on a hot saturday evening!

POINT TAKEN: Dancin' the Camera
WE ARE DONE!!!
I am very honored and excited to be part of the last Point Taken dance film project. Together with film maker Pieter-Rim de Kroon and producer Annemiek van der Hell from Windmill Film we created a short tap dance film in which the tap dancer gets close and dirty with the Parvo Debrie, a hand cranked film camera from the 1920's. Shoot will be in June 2015, and partially shot with the grand old camera itself in a wild and fantastical ode to the golden relationship between tap dance and film.
ONE MILLION STEPS, a tap dance adventure in the uprising of Istanbul
My dear friend director Eva Stotz has done the incredible: our film is finished! What a wild ride this was.. From our first visit to Istanbul in december 2012 to the crowdfunding campaign, then our first shooting in April 2013 and the spontaneous return in the middle of the Gezi Park protests in June 2013.
And then followed the arduous work of "finding" the film in all this matieral and meticulous post producion on minimal funds... Now we are impatiently awaiting the premiere, and will keep you posted on screenings! More info on this amazing project that has changed my life forever on the website www.onemillionsteps-project.com

PASSI Two masters of rhythm meet on the cross roads of life and music
Passi is a theatrical interactive concert by Sicilian musician and singer Vincenzo Castellana and Dutch tap dancer Marije Nie. Vincenzo is a world traveller deeply rooted in Sicilian tradition, Marije is a product of two cultures (Holland and Indonesia) playing an instrument of a third (America). Both follow their personal path through life and music, finding their voice as they go. They challenge themselves and each other with rhythms and questions. The answers lie inside a rich tapestry of beats, tap dance, songs, life stories and improvisations, which create a meeting place in rhythm full of curiosity and playfulness, and where the audience is invited inside wholeheartedly.

Marije Nie's Purple Gazelle!
Marije Nie's Purple Gazelle is a band built around the power and energy of tap dance. Virtuosic feet, stomping rhythms, open ballads and free improvisations bring out intense interactions between the musicians and the tap dancer. The tap is integral to the music, and together they hunt for sounds, grooves and songs that fit and challenge both the dancer and the musicians. A concert of Purple Gazelle is a journey into jazz sounds and rhythms, into movement that becomes music.
With classic songs by Duke Ellington as a starting point and the avant garde jazz as beacon, Purple Gazelle looks for adventure. With one leg in the (glorious) past and one leg in the future, tap dancer Marije Nie and her musicians create new paths in the rich tradition of tap dance and jazz.
Marije Nie: tap dance
Christian Pabst: piano
Guillaume Ortet: bas
Erik Kooger: drums
One Million Steps Continues..
Is there a link between the story of a lost tap dancer in the streets of istanbul - and the explosive reality in Istanbul now? Thousands of people on the streets, demanding a new direction and another way?
We saw an incredible new chapter to the story...
This is why One Million Steps core Team Eva Stotz and Marije Nie went back to Istanbul again in June and continued filming for "One Million Steps"!
TEDxDelft : the poetry in the pause It was a great experience to tell about the creative power of the pause, tap dancing and the film One Million Steps, a tap dancing adventure for TEDxDelft. Watch it here

One Million Steps a tap dancing adventure
ONE MILLION STEPS is not only a film about the infectious dynamic of tap dance, but also a poetic reflection about the millions of steps we take in our life. How do we do them and where do they bring us?
Travelogue is a tap dance concert interacting with a special edit of global images by One Million Steps director Eva Stotz. It was an amazing night.. Here the band in happy shadow mode, preparing for a show.
Taps And Traps Exciting project with the amazing drummer Erik Kooger. High energy duets filled with groove, soundscapes and highly interactive improvisations. It's feet vs hands in this rhythmic challenge between tapshoes and drumsticks.
